Eyelash Extensions 101

Eyelash extensions Sault Ste Marie

If you’re sick of trying to find the perfect mascara that gives you that dreamy doe-eyed look, eyelash extensions may be for you. With eyelash extensions, you may even find eye makeup unnecessary, as you can simply wake up with the captivating eyes you were dreaming of.

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are a method of achieving that perfect-lash look, without the hassle of eyeliner and mascara. A qualified technician applies individual lashes to your natural ones to give your lashes volume and length, and your eyes that flirty, sought-after appearance.

What are the benefits of eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions can save you time in your daily beauty routine, allowing you to skip the eye makeup and still look fabulous. Unlike temporary lashes, which last only a day, eyelash extensions last for weeks. And, because a skilled professional applies them, you don’t have to worry about perfecting makeup or application techniques which must be redone every single day. Many people also choose to get eyelash extensions for big events, such as a wedding, because they look gorgeous in pictures and withstand happy tears well.

How are they applied?

Eyelash extensions should be applied at a salon by a qualified, experienced professional. If you have eye sensitivities, you may want to book a patch test to make sure a full set of eyelash extensions won’t cause irritation. The first application generally takes approximately 1.5 hours to 2 hours. (If it takes less, you should be wary, because the technician may be taking shortcuts.)

Before your appointment, you and your technician will make decisions about the type of lashes to be applied based on the look you want. Different amounts of lashes, lengths, curls, and materials are available. Using the right combination, you can obtain the precise natural or dramatic look you want.

Next, you’ll simply lie down in a spa chair, your top lashes will be primed and your bottom lashes protected. You’ll then close your eyes and hopefully take a nap while you dream of beautiful lashes. The technician will glue lashes onto your natural ones to add length and create that long-lash look.

How long will extensions last?

Just like your natural lashes, eyelash extensions do fall out. While refills every 4 weeks are necessary, refilling every 2 to 4 weeks will ensure your eyelashes stay fresher and fuller. In your refill appointment, your technician will replace lashes as necessary.

How are extensions taken care of?

As well as refilling your lashes once every month or two, a bit of daily maintenance is necessary. After you get your extensions, you’re required to keep them dry for 24 hours to make sure the glue is completely dry, so prepare to avoid the shower, swimming pool, treadmill, and sad movies for a day. After this, saunas are still not recommended. On a daily basis, brushing your lashes will help to fan them out after sleeping. As well, some experts recommend washing your lashes at night with a gentle baby shampoo.

Although many people find that makeup feels unnecessary with full lashes, if you do decide to wear some, make sure to use water-based mascara only. Water-based eye makeup remover with a sponge-tip applicator (so as not to get debris on your lashes), is also recommended.

If you’re getting extensions for your wedding day and you want them to look perfect, you may want to get them put on far in advance of your big day so you can get used to the care process and make sure you get the look you want.

Microblading Do’s and Don’ts

If perfect eyebrows are a constant struggle, microblading may be worth considering. This procedure gives you semi-permanent gorgeous brows, without the hassle of drawing them on every day. Microblading is a type of tattoo which involves using a hand tool with at least 9 needles to create hair-like strokes, but unlike with tattoos, there’s no permanent commitment. The pigment will seep out of your skin within one to three years, allowing you to create a new look when you want it. If you’re considering getting your eyebrows microbladed, but still have some questions, here are Do’s and Don’ts to think about.

Do

Choose a knowledgeable professional

Microblading is all about precision. A good technician will work with you to create the look you want by drawing on each hair first and ensuring you are happy with the look before applying the semi-permanent ink. This is a job for someone with experienced and careful hands, so make sure you talk to the microblading professional before committing.

Prepare for the length of the process

Because your appointment will likely involve a conversation with your technician before each hair is drawn on, the entire process will likely take at least 2 hours. If your technician anticipates it taking less time than this, you should be concerned that they are not being as detailed as is needed. While the tattooing only takes about a half hour, the entire appointment will take longer, so make sure to schedule it in.

Know what you want

One good reason to invest in microblading is because the process works for a variety of eyebrow concerns. If your eyebrows are too thin, uneven, or just need a more defined arch, microblading is the answer. That said, if there’s a particular celebrity whose eyebrows you envy, or a specific look you’re going for, bringing a picture will allow the technician to get a better sense of what you want, which may shorten the initial steps of the process.

Don’t

Anticipate a quantity of pain

While a little pain is to be expected, the process is not as painful as you might think. Numbing creams are applied and the actual process of tattooing is short. If you’re curious what it feels like, the sensation of microblading has been compared to eyebrow threading. So, if you’re hesitant because you’re nervous about the pain, this likely won’t be an issue.

Forget aftercare

Although microbladed brows are fairly low maintenance, for one week after you get them done, you should not get your eyebrows wet, including with sweat. Ointments should also be applied to keep the cuts clean. Talk to your technician for details. Other than these initial steps, all that is required is a touch up after one month and one year, and you’re good to go!

Skip the Selfie

When you get microbladed brows, you don’t have to wait for them to heal. They look perfect as soon as you step out of the chair. So, don’t forget to take a selfie and show off your new look!

If you still have questions, feel free to book a consultation to discuss microblading with our qualified professionals. Hopefully, it won’t be long until your brows are stunning with zero work in the a.m.

Add a Few Drops of Essential Oils to Your Beauty Routine

The essential oil craze is ever growing, and for good reason. Essential oils are not only great for enhancing your mood and making you feel more relaxed, but can be used to keep you feeling young and beautiful as well. There are many essential oils that can be incorporated into your daily beauty routine, and here are some scents to get you started.

Before you pick up some new essential oils, though, make sure you become familiar with the safety rules around these products. For example as essential oils are highly concentrated, most essential oils should not be applied to the skin undiluted; therefore, make sure to blend essential oils with proper carrier oils or use them in combination with other ingredients. Knowing your skin type and your skin’s individual needs will allow you to choose the proper oils and ingredients to combine with essential oils. For instance, if you have dry skin, rose hip seed oil may work. Different essential oils, as well, are effective for different skin types and conditions. Below we’ve listed 5 essential oils that could help you stay radiant.

Frankincense

Originally an offering to the gods, frankincense has many beneficial properties. As a skin care product, it’s good for multiple skin types, including preventing wrinkles in aging skin. Therefore, it can be used as part of a moisturizer to improve the appearance of skin. Frankincense is also useful for acne-prone skin, including as a spot treatment, as well as to prevent further blemishes and reduce scarring. With its stress-reducing and skin-improving tendencies, it also could be an ideal essential oil to use in a facial massage, a good addition to your face care routine which removes toxins and stimulates blood flow, among other benefits.

German chamomile

Although some find the scent of German chamomile to be a bit overpowering, it is widely used in combination with other ingredients in the skin care industry. As well as being useful for skin conditions such as eczema, it also works well for dry and sensitive skin. German chamomile is also an effective addition to hair moisturizer or toner.

Lavender

Lavender essential oil is one of the most common oils we hear of, probably because it has so many uses, which range from treating colds to insomnia. In terms of beauty, lavender is useful in hot oil treatments for your hair, as it both treats dandruff and improves alopecia. Simply combine with a heated base oil, massage into your scalp, wrap your hair in plastic wrap and a towel, and leave it on your hair for at least two hours before shampooing twice to wash off. With its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties it’s also good for most skin types, making it an ideal oil for a facial steam.

Tea Tree

With its antiseptic, antiviral, and immune-stimulant properties, tea tree oil is well known for its medicinal uses. Essential oils can also be used in the bath and in massage, and tea tree is especially good for those with weak immune systems. In terms of perfecting your skin, it is especially useful for acne-prone skin as a spot treatment, including in combination with frankincense. Also when taking care of your skin in the summer, tea tree oil is quite effective in treating insect bites.

Jasmine

Useful for minimizing the appearance of scars and for helping dry skin, jasmine can certainly be used in facial treatments as well as body scrubs. With its romantic associations, this scent can make you both look and feel beautiful.

So, are essential oils soon to be an essential part of your beauty routine? Give them a try and see if they work for you! You can also come to Greenhouse Spa and give a few of our treatments a try.

How Can Water Therapy Benefit You?

Water-Therapy-sault-ste-marie

A hot bath when you’re stressed, a refreshing swim on a hot day, or a glass of water anytime—what could be better? Water has been recognized as a healer since at least the time of the Roman Empire when Roman baths were all the rage, and now you can harness the positive qualities of water with relaxing water therapy exclusive to The Greenhouse Spa.

At The Greenhouse Spa, you can benefit from PHYTOMER water therapy treatments in our unique water therapy room, which includes an acrylic wet treatment table, 7 head Vichy rainshower and custom shower unit. If you’re wondering how water therapy can help you, or why you should consider choosing one of our water treatments rather than a more standard massage, explained below are some of the great perks of water therapy:

For the Skin

Many people recognize the benefits of exfoliating the face on a regular basis, but exfoliating the entire epidermis is important as well. Ensuring your skin is well exfoliated not only makes for smoother, softer skin, but allows for better absorption of other products, such as moisturizers. The Satin Shimmer Vichy Rainshower Treatment exfoliates the skin with salt crystals which gently remove dead skin cells to leave your skin moisturized and refreshed. PHYTOMER, the company that blends many of the products we use in our treatments, is famous for harnessing natural ingredients from the sea to improve the look and feel of skin, and our water therapy treatments do just this!

For the Body

Did you know that water therapy can stimulate micro circulation? When circulation is improved, oxygen is better transported throughout the body, easing sore muscles and decreasing tiredness, as well as allowing for many other health improvements. Water therapy can also help eliminate toxins, which can boost your energy and immune system function. Hydrotherapy has also been known to help with colds, digestive problems, and insomnia, and our PHYTOMER system even breaks down fat and helps contour your body.

For the Mind

Water therapy is excellent for stress relief. Soothing massage combined with the revitalizing pitter pater of calming water allows your mind to drift away from your daily busy life. Honestly, what’s more relaxing than a body wrap, massage, and the gentle pressure of water across your body?

Personalized for You

With water therapy, you can enjoy the effects of our 7 head Vichy rainshower and a massage customized to your needs. Whether your main goal is taking a break from your busy life, caring for your skin, improving your health, or even breaking down fat, we have the customized water therapy treatment for you.

Thread Rightly: A brief guide to determine if threading is the best option for you

facial-hair-threading-sault-ste-marie

A history of threading

The desire to have the perfect brows is not a new trend; in cultures including Ancient Egypt, all body hair was removed with the exception of well-sculpted brows, and brow shaping was once seen as representative of entrance into adulthood in Persia. Among the most popular manners of achieving beautiful brows is threading. While this method may be relatively new to North America, it is certainly not simply a modern technique for hair removal. In fact, threading has been purported to have originated in Persia and China, among other countries, and has been practiced in India for at least 6,000 years! Originally, in India, threading was used for removing all unwanted hair from the face, and it can certainly still be used for this purpose, although today eyebrows are most commonly threaded.

How does threading work?

Using a single thin thread to create flawless eyebrows may seem like a magic trick, but it’s not; this is all a threading professional needs to create brows that precisely frame your face. Techniques vary, but threading usually involves rolling the knotted thread so it grips rows of hair, removing them cleanly from the root. Individual hairs, even tiny ones, are carefully targeted and picked up by the thread, leaving not a single unwanted hair behind.

Is threading really the best hair removal technique?

While threading may sound painful, many advocates find the method significantly less painful than other hair removal methods, such as waxing. Some who are new to threading find it slightly uncomfortable, but most, however, still say it’s worth it.

The main reason so many clients choose to refresh their brows with threading every 4 to 6 weeks is because it’s an incredibly precise technique. A professional can choose exactly which hairs to remove to raise the arch of the eyebrow, remove a unibrow, and ensure the client’s eyebrow shape best suits their face. And, as most beauty-buffs acknowledge, well-shaped brows make your whole face look so much better.

Because it doesn’t involve chemicals and doesn’t remove a layer of skin as waxing does, threading is also an ideal choice for those who are into natural beauty. Threading is also recommended for those on acne medications such as Accutane because it’s better for the skin and doesn’t cause the redness and soreness that waxing can. The process is much faster than grabbing every hair individually with a pair of tweezers, and, since it gets rid of even short hairs, it’s long-lasting. With all these benefits, threading still doesn’t typically cost more than waxing.

So, why doesn’t everyone choose threading? Well, for many, it is because it’s still difficult to find a professional eyebrow threader in many smaller North American cities. Luckily for Saultites, the new owner of The Greenhouse Spa, Uravi Jariwala, has been threading eyebrows for 10 years. She was trained in providing this sought after service in India, and it was the first service she offered when she moved to Canada 11 years ago. Uravi is taking on new clients, so if you’d like to learn more about this both ancient and modern technique for perfect brows or book your appointment, give The Greenhouse Spa a call at 705-256-6461.
